Do police kill dogs unnecessarily?
By admin on Jan 23, 2009 in Dogs | comments(7)
Here’s a partial list of stories I found this evening while researching this question. Most I’ve given the website and summarized. I put in a couple of articles that referenced several others. Be sure to read the post by a retired police officer that he never had to draw his gun on a dog, even though dogs were not fenced when he was a cop. At the end, I put in what most observers seem to agree is the cause of all this excess police force.

POLICE SHOOT DOG AFTER RESPONDING TO FALSE ALARM

WWLTV.com
New Orleans police responding to a tripped burglar alarm shot and killed a man’s Doberman dog in Lakeview early Monday.
There’s a Video at the website: Watch the Story
A police spokesman said Dr. Patrick Coleman’s two dogs charged at the officers when they responded to the alarm and that they shot the four-year-old black Doberman named Jax to halt the threat. The officers were in Coleman’s back yard when the incident occurred. Eight shell casings were found near the scene.
Coleman said the dead dog was ‘sweet and cuddly,’ but that he also was recovering from recent surgery and unlikely to be a threat as he could barely walk and had an eight-inch incision down his neck.

POLICE KILL INNOCENT PIT BULL by Horst Hoefinger
In West Toledo, Ohio a SWAT team showed up at the home of Sean Gillespie. They were there to arrest a friend who was renting a room in his house.
When the police were entering Gillespie’s property his dog Jozie, a pit bull, ran out into the yard. The police shot the pit bull, firing five times. According to neighbors who watched the incident the pit bull was not on the attack, she was wagging her tail.
