   First of all, there are two different programs, both of which are run by Social Security. One of them is called SSI, and it is for low income people who are blind, disabled, or elderly. You have to meet requirements for both income and resources (savings).

   The other program is Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and it comes from the Social Security (FICA) payments you made while working. In other words, you have to have been working and paying Social Security to get payments under the SSDI program.

   One of the useful parts of the Hoosiers with Disabilities page is that it explains what kinds of information you need to have available when you submit your application. (Look on the left-hand column to click on Social Security Disability Information.)

   Don’t forget that many employers, unions, and other organizations provide private disability insurance separate from the Social Security programs, and there is a chance you could qualify for that, too. Some people overlook insurance programs for which they qualify, so make sure you look into it.

   go to the local SSA office. I believe there is one on 56th and post rd they will be able to assist. If you live on the west side of Indy go to the SSA office near Lafayette and Georgetown RD.
