I am looking to move to Indianapolis, preferably in a suburb south of Indianapolis?

My boyfriend just got a job in Carmel, he wants to live south of Indianapolis. I am from the west, so I have no clue about the area, I do need to take into consideration the schools, the cost, and of course safe and decent neighborhoods. I also can’t commute too far to a job, Can anyone give me a few pointers?

The Greenwood area is a great place to live! There’s lots of nice shopping and easy interstate access to either I-65 or 465 – important to a commuter. There are a lot of new apartments being built in the area, if thats what you are looking for. If you are wanting a home, there’s quite a bit of new construction going on, but stick with a reputable builder, not the cheapest. I have heard a lot of complaints about CP Morgan homes and their quality (or lack of it). From what I have been told, it’s nearly impossible to get problems fixed after the deal is closed. Where CPMorgan is concerned (or, as it is known around Indiana, Cheapee Morgan) it’s totally “buyer beware”.
Good luck in your search and I hope you like living here as much as I do!

Hopefully the Hoosier state will welcome you nicely when you arrive…but, until then…here are a few comments:
Hopefully your bf is aware that Carmel is WAY north, and he is hoping to live WAY south probably. This will be a decent commute around our I-465 highway. You may want to keep your northside living options open, as Greenwood (a popular SouthSide community) is expensive for no damn reason in my opinion! Greenwood is a nice area, but it’s already starting to show its age. Rural Greenwood, IN is better…but the property is very expensive in comparison to what you can get in the city. However, coming from out west – everything will look like a bargin. Depending on your taste, you can get a very nice home in Indy from $150,000 – $250,000. If you’re doing apartments, you can get something nice for $550-$650/month.
All Indianapolis Township schools are good. Some rank a little better than others, but not to the extent of moving your family. However, if points matter – you should check out the Zionsville, IN area (which is west). Their public schools are stellar.
I’d recommend staying away from anything too close to the city as a rule of thumb. There are nice “spots” around the city, but too difficult to navigate those without being a saavy Hoosier already. If the township you are looking at is Center Twp…that’s too close to the city.
But even with your bf’s commute on 465 – Indianapolis traffic really isn’t THAT big of a deal. Therefore, you also shouldn’t worry too much about a commute as we typically can get anywhere in about 20 minutes.

Carmel is north and if you go anywhere, stay away from the east.
Where I am from the east is known as the forbidden zone. LOL
I was just informed by many that it is dangerous

Sparky is right , Greenwood is great place to live and itsonly 10 miles from downtown Indianapolis. Now Carmel is north of Indy, and is very good too.

Be sure your boyfriend is aware that it’s going to be a long commute from the South side to Carmel…especially if he’s working “normal” hours and has to deal with rush hour traffic.
If he’s sold on the South side, Greenwood is a nice area. There is a really nice mall, as well as every other shopping/eating/entertainment convenience you could want. Housing in Greenwood is going to be a lot less than in the Northern suburbs for no really good reason…the same house, less money, both are safe areas.
If you would consider moving to the West side, Avon, Brownsburg and Plainfield are all nice areas. You’ll find a lot of rush hour congestion in Avon as well.
If you do look at the North side, Carmel is an extremely nice area. As are Fishers and Noblesville. The traffic in all of these areas is horrendous, so beware. Along with that, housing is more expensive than other areas. They’re all safe communities.
As others have mentioned, I-465 is the interestate that circles Indy, so as long as you have fairly close access to that, you should be okay.
When choosing a home, stay on the “outside” of the I-465 loop.
Here’s a tool you can use to get a look at where ever you decide you’re interested in:
If you type in “Indianapolis, IN”, the map will zoom into that area. Click on “Street View”. This should make a camera appear, as well as the roads turn blue. Clicking on the camera will allow you to zoom, you’ll then see a little man which you can drag around the city. As long as you stay on a blue road you can drop him any where and get a street view as though you were actually standing on the street. You can also type in an exact address.
Good luck!
