Information about vandalism and burglary occurrences is available at the local police department for the asking. Management is not required to share such information with you.

Your lease remains valid as long as the management has regular security devices for your apartment. This includes nothing more than doors and windows which can be locked.

Sorry, Acermill is right. The break ins are a police matter, not a landlord matter. They are not a reason for breaking your contract.

If your laws are the same as they are in NC no you won’t be able to break the lease on those grounds. My daughter’s home was broke into twice in a 3 month period. She was not able to break her lease unless she wanted to pay 2 months rent and forfeit her deposit.

I just answered this on another question. WHY do you feel that you should be able to break your lease because of a break in? Do you think your mortgage company would let you out of a mortage if someone broke into a home you owned?

Just because you live in an apartment does not give you the right to have personal safety of your person or your items. The management may be aware of the issues but they are not the police, and do not have the obligation to make sure you are protected. A mortgage company isn’t going to pay to have security on a home, why should management?

I really want to know why people demand safety in an apartment community but would never dream of demanding safety from a mortgage lender. It’s ridiculous.
